What Time Should You Post On Social Media?
Does the Time You Post Actually Contribute to Your Success?
A lot of people believe there is a specific time of day that will magically get them more views, followers, and engagement. But the answer is ultimately no.
Over the years working in social media, I’ve tested this theory myself and have never seen a significant difference in performance simply because I posted at a particular time. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, has also said that the specific time you post does not determine whether or not your content will be successful.
Now, does that mean you should post at 2 a.m. when your entire audience is asleep? Of course not.
While the specific hour you post may not make a significant difference, the timing of your content absolutely does.
Timing Is Everything
What matters most is how relevant your content is when you post it.
People love following trends on social media, and I’ve personally had a lot of success creating content around trending topics. But there’s an important part of trend-based content that often gets overlooked: you need to be early.
If something was trending two weeks ago, chances are your audience has already seen it dozens, if not hundreds, of times. By the time you post, the trend may already be over.
That’s why getting your content out within the first few days can make a huge difference. The faster you can create and publish relevant content, the better your chances are of getting people to watch, share, and engage with it.
Think about visiting a new restaurant, store, museum, or other attraction during its grand opening. If you post a video giving people a “first look” while the experience is still new, people are much more likely to be interested and share it with others.
But if you wait a month to post about it, there’s a good chance dozens of other creators have already covered the same experience. The opportunity to be part of that initial conversation has passed.
So instead of obsessing over whether you should post at 5 p.m. or 6 p.m., focus on a much more important question:
“Is this content still relevant right now?”
Social media moves fast. Being the first—or at least being early—to a trend, event, or new experience can matter far more than the exact time on the clock.
As Ricky Bobby famously said, “If you’re not first, you’re last!”
